Arusha is the working capital of northern Tanzania safari travel, the place where flights land, briefings happen, and itineraries begin. Used well, a day here is not “wasted time”; it is recovery, orientation, and a chance to see more than the road west.
I’m John Raphael Shayo, and Tanzania Safari Magic operates from Arusha. Below are the activities we recommend most often before guests head to Tarangire, Serengeti, or Ngorongoro. Meet the people behind the trips on our about page.
Build an Arusha Day into Your Safari
Tell Our Team your arrival time, we will suggest a park half-day, rest-only evening, or full cultural add-on.
Arusha as a Safari Gateway
Most northern-circuit trips start here because roads and airstrips fan out toward the parks. Hotels understand early breakfasts; operators brief guests the evening before departure; currency and last-minute supplies are easy to find.
Treat Arusha as the calm before the dust and dawn drives, not a place to cram ten attractions into one jet-lagged afternoon.
Arusha National Park
The single best “thing to do” for most visitors is a day in Arusha National Park. You get Mount Meru views, forest colobus monkeys, open “Little Serengeti” plains, and optional canoeing on Momella Lakes, a different pace from Big Five vehicle days.
- Half day, viewpoints and a scenic game drive
- Full day, add walking and canoe when available
- Mount Meru trek, multi-day; plan separately from a wildlife circuit
Deep dive: our Arusha National Park guide.
Landing tomorrow with a free afternoon? We can still arrange a park half-day.
Add a Day TripCultural Experiences
Northern Tanzania’s cultural landscape is rich, Maasai and other communities live along the routes you will travel. The best visits are arranged with consent, fair payment, and enough time to listen rather than rush photos.
Ask Our Team which experiences fit your dates; we prefer quality over checklist tourism. Pair culture with park time only when your energy allows.
Markets & Town Time
If you enjoy local commerce, a guided market stop or craft centre visit can fill a gentle morning. Look for:
- Fresh produce markets (go with a local guide or driver)
- Curio centres for carvings, fabrics, and coffee, bargain politely
- Coffee or garden lodges for a quiet lunch before briefing
Keep valuables zipped, use hotel-arranged transport when unsure, and save serious shopping for the end of the trip if luggage space is tight.
The Prep Day Before Safari
Our favourite “activity” is sometimes doing less:
- Sleep after long-haul flights
- Confirm luggage is soft-sided and within light-aircraft limits if flying
- Meet Our Team for a short itinerary briefing
- Charge batteries, withdraw a small cash float, check binoculars
- Eat an early dinner and aim for a dawn-friendly bedtime
When you are ready to leave town, explore safari packages or book your dates. Learn more about how we work on About Tanzania Safari Magic.
