Arusha National Park sits on the doorstep of safari capital Arusha, a compact park of forests, crater highlands, and Momella Lakes beneath the slopes of Mount Meru. It is the ideal first or last day when you want walking, canoeing, and colobus monkeys before the big northern circuit.
This guide from Tanzania Safari Magic (Our Team) covers wildlife expectations, climate, best time, half- vs full-day plans, key areas, activities, booking, prices, whether it’s worth adding, Arusha town stays, and FAQs. For the wider trip, start with our Tanzania safari guide.
Plan an Arusha National Park Day
Tell Our Team whether you want a half day, full day with canoe, or Meru trek logistics, we reply with timing that fits your Serengeti departure.
About Arusha National Park
Often overlooked between airport arrivals and the drive west to Tarangire or Ngorongoro, Arusha National Park offers a different pace: ranger-escorted walks, canoe time on alkaline lakes, and forest game drives with Meru dominating the skyline.
I’m John Raphael Shayo. With Our Team at Tanzania Safari Magic, we recommend this park when guests have a free afternoon after landing, want an active day before long game-drive circuits, or need a gentle introduction for families and first-time safari travellers.
Wildlife (Not a Classic Big Five Park)
Set expectations clearly: Arusha National Park is not where you go for lions, leopards, or rhinos on a standard day trip. What you do get is memorable:
- Black-and-white colobus monkeys, a highlight in the forest canopy
- Giraffe & buffalo, often on the open “Little Serengeti” plains
- Zebra, warthog, waterbuck, common on game drives
- Birdlife, flamingos and waterbirds around Momella when conditions favour them; forest species inland
- Hippo, occasional lake-edge sightings
Save Big Five intensity for Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater days on the same holiday.
Climate
Elevation keeps mornings cooler than the lowland parks. Forest shade helps on walks; lake shores can be bright and reflective at midday. Long rains make some trails muddier, still workable with the right footwear and flexible timing.
| Season | Conditions | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Jun–Oct | Drier trails, clearer Meru views | Walking, photography, canoe |
| Nov–Dec | Short rains, lush forest | Birding, softer light |
| Jan–Feb | Often pleasant gaps in rain | Day trips before southern migration trips |
| Mar–May | Long rains, green scenery | Fewer visitors; pack waterproofs |
Best Time to Visit Arusha National Park
June–October is the most straightforward window for walks and mountain views. Shoulder and green seasons reward birders and guests who prefer quieter trails. Country-wide timing tips: best time to visit Tanzania. If your main goal is migration herds, prioritise Serengeti months in our migration guide and use Arusha NP as the arrival buffer day.

Add a Day TripHalf Day vs Full Day
- Half day (3–5 hours), game drive highlights + viewpoint; fits arrival or departure days
- Full day, combine canoe on Momella, a guided walk, and a scenic drive
- Mount Meru trek, multi-day climb; plan separately from a wildlife day trip
Most Tanzania Safari Magic guests use a half or full day here inside a longer safari package, not as a standalone holiday.
Park Areas to Know
- Little Serengeti (Serengeti Ndogo), open grassland for giraffe and buffalo views with Meru backdrop
- Ngurdoto Crater, forested caldera viewpoint (vehicles stay on the rim; no floor descent for guests)
- Momella Lakes, alkaline lakes for canoeing, birds, and reflective mountain photos
- Waterfalls & forest trails, guided walks to falls and colobus habitat (ranger required)
More maps and practical notes: Arusha National Park destination page.
Activities: Walk, Canoe & Meru
- Guided walking safari, ranger-escorted forest and waterfall trails; a rare active contrast to vehicle-only parks
- Canoeing on Momella Lakes, calm water birding with Meru in view (season and operator availability apply)
- Game drives, pop-up 4x4 loops through plains and forest edges
- Mount Meru climbing, multi-day trek for peak-baggers; we coordinate with safari dates so logistics stay simple
How to Book
Book Arusha National Park through a local Arusha operator so park fees, canoe slots, and walking rangers are confirmed together. Overseas agents rarely improve access here, proximity is the advantage.
- Private day trip with Tanzania Safari Magic (recommended)
- Add-on to any northern circuit or group safari departure
- Meru trek + safari combinations on request
Use our booking form or WhatsApp Our Team with your flight arrival time.
Prices
A private half- or full-day Arusha NP excursion is usually a modest add-on compared with Serengeti or Ngorongoro nights, vehicle, guide, park fees, and optional canoe are the main lines. Multi-day Meru climbs are priced separately like other treks.
For overall safari budgeting, see Tanzania Safari Cost 2026.
Worth It as a Safari Add-On?
Yes when you value walking, canoeing, forest primates, and Meru scenery, or when you have a spare day in Arusha before heading to Serengeti, Ngorongoro, or Tarangire.
Skip or shorten if every day must maximise Big Five sightings and your itinerary is already tight. In that case, go straight west and keep Arusha as a sleep-and-depart base only.
Where to Stay in Arusha Town
Almost everyone bases in Arusha town or nearby coffee-lodge country rather than inside the park. Choose a hotel that matches your arrival: airport transfer friendly, early-breakfast capable for safari departure days, and quiet enough after long flights.
- City hotels, convenient for dinners and briefings with Our Team
- Garden / coffee lodges on the edge of town, calmer, still within park day-trip range
- Post-safari, many guests fly onward to Zanzibar; see our Zanzibar guide
