Home to one of the densest lion populations on earth and the world-famous Great Wildebeest Migration in the Serengeti, Tanzania sits among the planet’s finest safari destinations.
Beyond wildlife, Tanzania offers Indian Ocean beaches on Zanzibar and Africa’s highest free-standing peak, Mount Kilimanjaro. With the right local plan, you can combine bush and beach in one seamless trip.
With more than 20 national parks and conservation areas, choosing where to go, and how many days to allocate, can feel overwhelming. Distances between parks are real, lodge quality varies by season, and migration herds move constantly.

7 Reasons to Go on Safari in Tanzania
Tanzania welcomes millions of visitors each year. These are the reasons guests who book with us keep returning.
1. The Great Migration
Over a million wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle move through the Serengeti in a continuous cycle. Peak drama includes Mara River crossings (roughly July–October), calving on the southern plains (January–March), and western corridor crossings around May–July. Pair this with our migration safari packages for the right sector and month.
2. Hiking Kilimanjaro
Kilimanjaro National Park protects Africa’s highest peak, Uhuru Peak at 5,895 m, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Machame, Lemosho, Marangu, Rongai, and Northern Circuit routes are among the most requested. We coordinate private climbs with safari days so logistics stay simple from Arusha or Moshi. See Kilimanjaro climb packages or the full Kilimanjaro destination guide.
3. Maasai & Hadzabe Culture
Respectful cultural visits near the northern circuit add depth beyond game drives, especially when paced into a private itinerary rather than rushed stopovers.
4. The Big Five
Lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino are all possible on a well-planned northern circuit. Tarangire is outstanding for elephant herds; Ngorongoro Crater remains one of the better chances for rhino.
5. Predator Density
Tanzania holds a large share of Africa’s wild lions. Central Serengeti (Seronera) and the crater floor often deliver memorable big-cat sightings when you spend enough days on the ground.
6. Tree-Climbing Lions & Unique Behaviour
Tree-climbing lions are regularly reported in parts of the Serengeti. Lake Manyara historically shared this reputation; flooding and changing water levels mean sightings shift, another reason to travel with up-to-date local guides.
7. Safari + Beach (Zanzibar)
End on Zanzibar’s white sand after the bush. Short flights or connections make bush-to-beach packages our most popular “complete Tanzania” formula, see our safari & Zanzibar combo tours.

For most travellers, the best value and experience come from a reputable local tour operator based in Tanzania, not a last-minute hotel desk or opaque overseas middleman.
- Local operator (recommended): Direct pricing, flexible day-by-day changes, guides who know current wildlife movements. This is how Tanzania Safari Magic works from Arusha.
- Private safari: Your own vehicle and guide, ideal for couples, families, and photographers.
- Shared group safari: Lower cost per person, fixed departures, less flexibility.

How Much Does a Tanzania Safari Cost?
Budget depends on season, lodge tier, park combination, flight segments, and group size. As a planning range for a mid-range private northern circuit safari (per person, sharing):
- Comfort / mid-range: often from roughly USD 350–650+ per person per day
- Luxury: frequently USD 700–1,500+ per person per day
Costs include park fees, lodging, guiding, and most meals on safari, always confirm inclusions. Flying between parks raises comfort and cost; driving the circuit is classic and scenic.

Best Time to Visit Tanzania
- June–October (dry / peak): Excellent game viewing; popular for river crossings in northern Serengeti.
- January–February (short dry): Calving season on southern plains; green scenery; strong predator action.
- March–May (long rains): Fewer crowds, lush landscapes, possible lodge deals; some roads muddy.
- November–December: Short rains; beautiful light; good value for flexible travellers.
Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar have their own micro-seasons, we balance both when you book a combo.
How Many Days in Tanzania?
- 4–6 days: Tarangire + Ngorongoro + short Serengeti taste
- 7–9 days: Full northern circuit with proper Serengeti time (our sweet spot)
- 10–14 days: Migration focus or safari + Zanzibar beach
Browse live durations on our safari packages page.
The Great Migration in Tanzania
There is no single “migration month.” Herds follow rain and grass. For river crossings, plan northern Serengeti in peak dry months; for calving, focus south (Ndutu / Ndutu-adjacent areas) in early year. We adjust camps as herds move, that flexibility is why private local planning beats rigid group tours.
