7-Day Kilimanjaro Route Comparison: Machame vs Lemosho vs Marangu

Which Kilimanjaro route should you climb in 2026? For most campers the shortlist is Machame (6–7 days) and Lemosho (7–8 days). Marangu is the hut route. Extra days raise summit odds more than any marketing slogan. Tanzania Safari Magic designs the climb from Arusha around your fitness and calendar.

If you can take eight days, Lemosho or a 7-day Machame with a sensible pace beats a rushed 5-day Marangu for most summit-focused climbers. Northern Circuit (9 days) is the extra-acclimatisation option, see route pages on /kilimanjaro/routes.

Machame (Whiskey), the popular 6–7 day camp

Machame approaches from the south-west, joins the southern circuit, and descends Mweka. Six days is common; seven days is the wiser default for acclimatisation. Expect rainforest, moorland, and a dramatic Barranco Wall day.

Choose Machame if you want the classic camping experience and can handle a popular trail. Pair it with a short safari after the climb, not the same week as a marathon.

Lemosho, the 7–8 day scenery pick

Lemosho starts further west, spends more time in quieter forest, then joins the same southern circuit as Machame. The extra day is the point: more sleep at altitude before the summit night. It usually costs more than Machame because of the extra park days and logistics.

Choose Lemosho if you can spend 7–8 days and want a less abrupt start. It is our frequent recommendation for first-time trekkers who can take the time.

Marangu (Coca-Cola), huts, 5–6 days

Marangu is the only standard route with hut bunks and a shared-trail up-and-down profile. Five days is short for 5,895 m. Six days is kinder. It can be practical in wetter months when you want a roof, but it is not “easier” in a summit-success sense if you cut days.

Why 7–8 days beats 5–6 for most people

Altitude, not fitness gym scores, decides most turnarounds. An extra night on the mountain is the highest-leverage upgrade you can buy. Read acclimatisation and difficulty before you lock a 5-day plan because it looks cheaper, see cost guide for what those extra days actually add.

Climb + safari

Do Kilimanjaro first, rest in Arusha, then safari, or safari first if you want to walk in with some African miles. Do not stack a crater descent the morning after Uhuru Peak. We build the buffer into combo quotes.

Comparison FAQs

Is Lemosho better than Machame?
Lemosho is often better if you can take 7–8 days: quieter start and more acclimatisation. Machame on 7 days is still an excellent, proven trail. The wrong choice is a 5-day rush on any route.
Which route has the highest summit success?
Longer itineraries win. Northern Circuit and 8-day Lemosho profiles generally outperform short Marangu. Your guide, pace, and health matter as much as the name of the trail.
Can I combine Kilimanjaro with a Serengeti safari?
