Tanzania Safari + Zanzibar Beach: How to Combine Them

New for 2026: Combining the mainland with Zanzibar? Buy the entry insurance that matches your first point of entry. Our 2026 entry insurance guide explains how.

The classic Tanzania trip is safari then beach. Most first-timers do 5–8 days on the northern circuit (Tarangire, Ngorongoro, Serengeti) from Arusha, then 3–5 nights in Zanzibar, Stone Town plus an east-coast beach. Tanzania Safari Magic sequences both so you are not guessing flights or lodge nights.

Start with safari packages, skim the Zanzibar hub and Zanzibar guide, then ask us to lock a bush-to-beach calendar.

How many days for safari + Zanzibar?

Total tripSafari daysZanzibar nightsWho it suits
8–9 days5–62–3Tight schedule; still worth the beach
10–12 days6–83–5Most popular first Tanzania trip
14+ days8–104–6Migration or Kilimanjaro plus beach

Do not cut the Serengeti to a single night just to add Zanzibar. Two or three Serengeti nights change the wildlife odds. Read what a Serengeti quote should include before you trade a park night for an extra beach day.

How you get from safari to Zanzibar

  • Fly Arusha (ARK) or Kilimanjaro (JRO) to Zanzibar (ZNZ), the cleanest finish after a northern safari. We time the last game drive so you are not sprinting.
  • Fly from Seronera or another Serengeti airstrip on fly-in itineraries, fewer road hours, higher cost.
  • Do not plan a same-day Ngorongoro crater + international-style connection unless we have already checked the clock. Crater mornings run long.

We book the hop as part of the quote so you are not piecing airline websites at midnight.

Safari first, then beach, almost always

Do the bush first. You will be dusty, early-rising, and full of wildlife. Zanzibar is where you sleep in, snorkel, and walk Stone Town. Reverse order (beach then safari) works only if your international flight lands in Zanzibar, we can still start there, but most JRO arrivals should safari first.

What a combo costs in 2026

Add the safari day rate to Zanzibar lodging:

  • Mid-range safari: typically ~$450–$650+ pp/day (see safari cost 2026)
  • Zanzibar beach lodge: widely ~$150–$400+ pp/night half board, more for luxury
  • Domestic flight hop: budget a few hundred USD per person depending on season

A 10-day mid-range bush-to-beach trip for two is often in the several-thousand-USD-per-person range once parks, lodges, and the hop are included, we price yours from live 2026 rates.

When to combine them

Dry-season safari (June–October) pairs well with Zanzibar, though the island is warmer and can be humid. January–February is excellent for calving in the southern Serengeti plus beach time. Long rains (April–May) are quieter and often better lodge value, ask us which beach belts stay pleasant.

If the Great Migration is the priority, match months with the month-by-month migration calendar, then park Zanzibar at the end.
