Aprils in Tanzania | A Month of Opportunity

April in Tanzania is the month glossy brochures skip, which is why we wrote this. The long rains turn the northern circuit emerald, lodge rates soften, and the wildebeest migration is a westward journey rather than a river circus. If that sounds like your kind of travel, April is an opportunity.

April weather

Long rains (masika) peak around April–May in many northern highlands. Expect warm days, muddy tracks, and theatrical skies. Arusha can feel cool at night. Pack a proper jacket, not a souvenir poncho. Country seasons: best time to visit Tanzania.

April’s migration chapter

Calving is over. Animals move toward the Western Corridor. It is a guide’s month, not a viewpoint-lottery month. Full detail sits in The Serengeti’s Great Wildebeest Migration in April, with the year map on the overview.

Kilimanjaro in April

Trails are wet, views can vanish, and summit night is colder in the damp. We would rather you climb in a drier window, timing guide, route comparison, packages. April is better spent on safari value.

Zanzibar in April

Sea is warm; rain is real. Stone Town still works. Beach-only holidays have better odds in June–October or January–February. Combo planning: safari + Zanzibar.

A smart 8-day April itinerary

  1. Arusha arrival
  2. Tarangire or Manyara
  3. Ngorongoro Crater
  4. 4 nights central–west Serengeti (all-weather camps)
  5. Back to Arusha, skip a rushed island if storms sit on Unguja

Group dates sometimes sit in shoulder months: open group safaris. Private quotes: /booking. Costs: 2026 safari cost.

April in Tanzania FAQs

Is April a good time to visit Tanzania?
Yes if you want value, greenery, and fewer people, and you accept the long rains. It is not the month for guaranteed Mara crossings or the driest Kilimanjaro trails.
Does it rain all day in April?
Often in bursts, especially afternoons. Morning game drives still run. Some remote camps close; we only quote open, accessible properties.
Where is the migration in April?
Moving from the southern plains toward central and western Serengeti. Details: our April migration guide.
Can I climb Kilimanjaro in April?
Possible but wet. Most climbers prefer January–March or June–October. We will say so on a climb quote.
Is Zanzibar nice in April?
Warm, humid, with a real chance of rain. Beach days happen; it is not the high-sun postcard month.
