The Serengeti’s Great Wildebeest Migration in April

April is when the migration stops posing for calving postcards and starts walking west. Long rains feed the grass. Herds splinter through the southern-central Serengeti and begin the approach toward the Western Corridor. It is a specialist month, and a bargain month if you like drama in the sky.

Country-wide context lives in our companion piece April in Tanzania. This page is Serengeti-only.

April balloons, when they fly, look over a green Serengeti, not the gold dust of August.

April is an opportunity month

Fewer guests, theatrical storms, and herds on the move. Ask us which camps remain open.

Migration map for April

Think south-central toward the west, not Ndutu nursery and not Kogatende. You follow columns of animals rather than a single calving lawn. Some years the push is early; some years grass holds them south longer. That is why a local operator matters more in April than in February.

Next stop on the calendar is often the Grumeti story in May and June.

The case for April

  • Lowest vehicle pressure of the migration year in many sectors
  • Birdlife and raptors riding storms
  • Lodge rates that undercut July–October
  • Resident Seronera cats still excellent when mega-herds are strung out

The case against: muddy tracks, occasional closed seasonal camps, and no river-crossing lottery. If your only acceptable photo is a Mara leap, book July instead.

Green-season residents, elephants, giraffe, and cats, carry an April safari even when wildebeest are strung along corridors.

Getting around in the long rains

We favour reliable 4x4s, conservative daily distances, and camps with all-weather access. Fly-in to central strips can skip the worst road days. Balloon companies sometimes pause in heavy weather, we treat balloons as a bonus, not a promise, in April.

What to combine with April Serengeti

Ngorongoro Crater remains a high-yield wildlife day. Tarangire is greener and may show fewer elephant concentrations than peak dry season, we say so on the quote. Kilimanjaro in April is a wet climb; most guests wait. Zanzibar is possible but humid; see the island guide.

April migration FAQs

Can you see the migration in April?
Yes, usually as moving columns in south-central and western approaches, not as a single Ndutu super-herd and not as Mara crossings.
Is April too wet for safari?
It is the heart of the long rains. Drives still happen; some remote camps close. We design around all-weather access.
Are April safaris cheaper?
Often significantly, because demand drops. Value is the April selling point.
Should I include the crater in April?
Yes. The crater floor stays wildlife-dense when the Serengeti is wet and spread out.
April or May for Grumeti?
May is usually closer to Western Corridor crossings. April is the approach and the rain.

If a camp will be a mud island, we will not sell it. That is the Arusha difference.
