February is the month many migration specialists quietly prefer. On the Ndutu plains you are as close as the Serengeti gets to a guarantee of mega-herds, plus a daily pulse of newborns that draws every predator within range.
Tanzania Safari Magic plans February from Arusha around one rule: sleep where the grass is short. A central-only itinerary misses the point. Pair this chapter with the January and March guides if your flights sit on a shoulder.

Where is the migration in February?
Stay on the Ndutu / Kusini / southern short-grass axis. Herds are typically more tightly gathered than in January. You will still game-drive, not walk among animals, but the horizon is brown with wildebeest in a way that photographs cannot fully explain until you are there.
Ndutu sits in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, which also means a crater day slots in naturally on the same circuit. Use our Serengeti park guide if you want a central-cat add-on after the south.
Calving season, honestly
Peak calving often lands in February. Estimates of several thousand calves a day in the busiest weeks are widely cited across the industry, the exact count shifts with rain. What you will remember is the sound (grunts, birds, hyenas) and the speed of hunts on open ground.
This is not a sanitized wildlife film. We brief guests: you may see kills. If that is not for you, we can still safari in February with more time in Tarangire or Lake Manyara, but Ndutu will always be predator-rich when the nursery is full.
Where to stay, and what “mobile” means
There are almost no big brick lodges sitting in the heart of Ndutu. You choose quality tented camps that follow the season. That is a feature: shorter drives to the herds. We mix mid-range and luxury canvas on one quote and explain which camps include a private vehicle.
- Fly-in is possible but many February trips remain a scenic drive from Arusha via crater highlands
- Three nights is a minimum; five is a photographer’s itinerary
- Ask us about walking or cultural add-ons only where conservation rules allow, usually not inside the national park core
Should I skip February for July instead?
Only if your dream picture is a Mara River crossing. February cannot deliver that. It delivers scale. Families, first-timers, and photographers who want “wildebeest forever” often leave February happier than guests who sat in traffic at a northern crossing in August. Compare months in the overview.
A practical February circuit
Arusha → optional Manyara or Tarangire → crater → 4 nights Ndutu → optional Seronera → Arusha or Zanzibar. We publish live packages on /safaris and timed northern trips under /migrations (those are for later in the year).
