The Serengeti’s Great Wildebeest Migration in May

May is the migration’s western turn. Herds funnel through the Western Corridor toward the Grumeti River, crocodile water that never gets the same Instagram fame as the Mara, which is exactly why many of our repeat guests like it.

For the whole country (Kilimanjaro, beach, crowds), open May in Tanzania. Stay here for Serengeti tactics.

River tension starts in the west, May is about the Grumeti story, not yet the northern Mara theatre.

May Western Corridor dates

Tell us whether you want a river camp or a flexible central-west mix as rains ease.

Where is the migration in May?

Focus on the Western Corridor and the approaches to the Grumeti. Animals are not in one postcard herd every day, they stack, wait, and test the water. Central Seronera remains a cat stronghold if you want a two-centre safari.

June often completes the rut and the western crossings; read June if your flights sit late May.

Why Grumeti crossings are underrated

The river is smaller than the Mara, but Nile crocodiles still write the script. Vehicle numbers are typically lower than Kogatende in August. You need patience and a guide who knows the bends, which is what our Arusha-based driver-guides do for a living. Peak Mara chaos is covered in August.

Wildebeest crossing a river during the Great Migration
A crossing is never scheduled. May guests should book river-adjacent nights and accept that some days are “building,” not leaping.

May weather

The long rains usually ease through May, especially toward month-end. Mornings can dawn clear; afternoons may still storm. It is a shoulder, not high dry season. Roads improve as the month ages. Balloon odds beat April.

Camp strategy

Western Corridor camps (including Grumeti reserve properties where they fit your budget) plus optional Seronera. Drive-in from Arusha via Ngorongoro is standard; fly-in saves a long western road. Peek at live itineraries on migration safaris and broader packages.

May migration FAQs

Can I see river crossings in May?
Grumeti crossings often begin in this window, especially later in May. They are never guaranteed on a named day.
Is May better than April for safari?
Usually yes, rains ease, western herds concentrate, and more camps operate.
May or June for the west?
June is often drier and busier with the rut. May can be greener and better value. We match the week, not the label.
Do I need a fly-in for May?
Not required. Fly-in is a comfort upgrade for the Western Corridor’s distance.
Is May good for first-time safari guests?
Yes if you accept some rain and a moving herd. We still include crater and a resident-wildlife night so the trip is not only wildebeest.
