The Serengeti’s Great Wildebeest Migration in August

August is the month people point at when they say “Great Migration.” In northern Serengeti the herds are usually established, the river is a daily question, and the light is dry-season gold. It is also the month you must book like a professional: right camp, enough nights, early aircraft.

August location

Sleep in the far north. Central Serengeti in August is still a superb cat park, but it is not where the migratory mass usually sits. Kenya’s Maasai Mara holds animals too; you can see crossings from Tanzania without crossing the border. Our overview compares the two countries.

A typical August game-drive day

Dawn start, river loops, wait, maybe a crossing, maybe a lion on a kopje instead. Picnic breakfasts, radio chatter, patience. Afternoon: another bank, or inland grazing herds that are equally photogenic. This is not a zoo schedule. Guests who treat it as a wildlife stakeout leave happier than guests who treat it as a theme-park queue.

Crowds, honestly

Popular crossing bends attract vehicles. Licensed Tanzanian guides still have more room than the densest Mara circuits on many days. We brief drivers: no blocking, no engine roaring at swimming animals, leave space. If a bank is a parking lot, we try another. That ethic is part of booking a local operator rather than a distant reseller.

Do not make the whole trip “the river”

Add Ngorongoro, maybe Tarangire, and enough central or north nights. Then park on Zanzibar if you want salt after dust. August is also a prime Kilimanjaro month, we can trek first, safari second, with a rest day in Arusha.

August migration FAQs

Is August the best month for Mara crossings?
It is one of the two or three strongest. July–October is the crossing season; August often has herds fully in the north.
How crowded is August?
Peak. Choose Tanzania’s north over the busiest Mara viewpoints if you want relatively more space, and book a private vehicle.
What does an August safari cost?
Peak northern rates. Mid-range private trips still often land in the mid-hundreds of USD per person per day; luxury river camps cost more. See our cost guides.
August or September?
Both work. September can be slightly less frantic with similar crossing potential. We compare live camp availability.
Should I fly or drive in August?
Fly if the north is the point of the trip. Drive if you want the classic crater-to-Serengeti road and have extra days.
