The Serengeti’s Great Wildebeest Migration in June

June opens Tanzania’s dry season and, for the migration, finishes the western chapter. Rutting wildebeest, Grumeti drama, and clearer roads make it one of the most balanced months we sell from Arusha, before July prices and northern logistics take over.

June still belongs to western water more than the Mara, but the northward lean has begun.

June: west now, north soon

Share your dates. If you sit late June we will say honestly whether west or a north fly-in is the smarter bet.

Where are the herds in June?

Western Corridor and Grumeti remain the headline, with animals beginning to stack for the turn north. The rut (males sparring, dust, noise) is a June signature many guests did not know to expect. Central Serengeti stays outstanding for leopards and lions, a useful second camp.

If you can only travel in the last week of June, also read July.

River crossings in June

Grumeti crossings are the realistic prize. Mara crossings in the far north usually wait until July. Anyone promising “guaranteed Mara jumps on 12 June” is selling a calendar, not a wildebeest. We book extra western nights so you can wait on a bend.

Why June feels “classic safari”

Grass drops, animals pin to water, and dust returns in a good way. Tarangire elephants start to shine. Ngorongoro is crisp. It is also when international demand rises, so book camps early, see cost guidance.

How we build June

  1. Tarangire or Manyara opener
  2. Ngorongoro Crater
  3. 3–4 nights Western Corridor / Grumeti
  4. Optional Seronera
  5. Arusha, Kilimanjaro trek, or Zanzibar

June migration FAQs

Is June a good Great Migration month?
Excellent for Grumeti, the rut, and dry-season viewing. It is not the main Mara-crossing month.
June or July for first-timers?
June is slightly quieter and more western. July starts the northern Mara story and peak rates.
Will I see the rut?
June is one of the best months to watch male wildebeest sparring as herds bunch in the west.
Is June crowded?
Busier than April–May, gentler than August. Book western camps early anyway.
Can I add a balloon in June?
Yes, June is a strong balloon month when weather cooperates. We add it as a line item on the quote.
