The Serengeti’s Great Wildebeest Migration in October

October is the northern migration’s epilogue. Early month can still look like September on the Mara River. Late month, storm heads build and columns begin the long walk south. You book October with a split brain: river first, then flexibility.

October can still deliver crossings, then the short rains start whispering “south.”

October: north early, south if rains break

Tell us whether you travel week one or week four. The itinerary should not be identical.

Two Octobers

Weeks 1–2: stay northern if crossings are the goal. Weeks 3–4: we watch forecasts and may add central nights or even a southern lean if the short rains arrive early. Nobody should copy-paste an August itinerary onto 28 October without a conversation. Continue in November.

Can October still show a crossing?

Yes, especially in the first half. Animals that remain north still have to drink and sometimes still have to cross. Treating October as “migration over” is a mistake. Treating it as “August forever” is also a mistake.

End-of-dry landscapes are stark and beautiful, October light is a photographer’s friend even without a leap.

Short rains and southward intent

When the short rains stitch a green path south, herds follow. That path is why November looks so different. October is the hinge. Country-wide, October is still a premium safari month, crater, Tarangire, and Manyara all shine. See best time to visit Tanzania.

October migration FAQs

Is October too late for the Great Migration?
No. Early October is still a northern crossing month in many years. Late October is a transition.
October or September for crossings?
September is the safer “still north” bet. October can match it early, then change.
Are October camps cheaper?
Sometimes toward month-end. It is not April-cheap. Ask for a dated comparison.
Should I fly to the north in late October?
Only if reports still justify it. We may recommend more central nights instead.
Is October good if I also want Kilimanjaro?
Yes, it is a classic dry-leaning climb month. Sequence trek then safari or the reverse with a rest day.
