The Serengeti’s Great Wildebeest Migration in March

March is the southern migration’s closing act. Calves born in January and February are stronger. Herds begin to loosen and drift toward the Serengeti side of Naabi as the long rains threaten. You still come for plains and predators, you just stay flexible on the exact drainage line.

Where are the herds in March?

Expect a mix of remaining Ndutu concentrations and animals spreading across the southern and south-central Serengeti. By late March, some groups are already thinking west. That is why we dislike rigid “always Ndutu” copy for 25 March arrivals, we check rainfall and recent guide reports before we freeze lodge nights.

If your dates sit at month-end, peek at April as well. The overview calendar shows the clockwise loop.

What March still delivers

  • Young wildebeest keeping up with the cows, less “newborn collapse,” more bouncing juveniles
  • Excellent cat viewing while prey remains on open grass
  • Dramatic cloudscapes as the rainy season builds, bring a rain jacket, not a cancelled mindset
  • Often softer rates than February peak calving weeks

Will rain ruin a March safari?

Showers can be heavy, especially late month, but they rarely steal a whole day. Roads in black-cotton soil get slippery; we use proper 4x4s and avoid camps that become islands. Green-season photography (rainbows, dark skies, wet coats) is a feature for many guests. How we place March nights

Typical build: crater + 3 southern/Ndutu nights, with a spare central night if herds have already stepped toward Seronera. Fly-in is optional. Adding Zanzibar after March parks is easy, the island is lush too.

March also suits travellers who want migration flavour without July prices. See Serengeti cost 2026.

March migration FAQs

Is March too late for calving?
Peak calving is usually January–February, but March still shows many young animals and remaining southern herds.
Do camps close in March?
Some seasonal camps start winding down toward the long rains. We only quote properties that will be open for your dates.
March or February, which should I book?
Book February for the densest nursery. Book March for slightly greener scenes, often better availability, and still-strong southern game.
Can I climb Kilimanjaro in March then safari?
Possible, but late March is wetter on the mountain. See our Kilimanjaro timing guide.
Is March good for families?
Yes if you accept some rain. Shorter walks, crater day, and Ndutu game drives work well for mixed ages.
