The Serengeti’s Great Wildebeest Migration in July

July is the month the migration becomes a northern Serengeti product. Herds push toward the Mara River. Crossings can start from mid-month in a typical year, sometimes earlier, sometimes later. This is fly-in country if you dislike 4x4 marathons.

July north: book the river, not a single date

We hold Kogatende-area nights and keep a Seronera or crater backbone so the trip is still a full safari.

Where to be in July

Kogatende, Lamai, and other northern concessions put you on the Tanzania bank of the Mara. Early July can still see animals arriving; late July is often “they’re here.” We watch Kenya’s Mara too, some animals commute, but you do not need a Kenya visa for a northern Serengeti safari.

Continue the story in August and September.

Will I see a crossing in July?

Maybe. That is the only honest answer. Crossings happen in pulses, sometimes several in a day, sometimes none while animals graze a kilometre back. We plan four northern nights when the budget allows. Two nights is a raffle ticket.

The leap is real, and unscripted. Extra nights beat a lucky lunch hour.

Why we push fly-in for July

The north is a long, tiring road from Arusha after crater and central parks. A scheduled light-aircraft hop from Arusha or Seronera saves a day and puts more hours on the river. Drive-in still works for guests who enjoy the journey and want to save the flight cost, we price both. See what a Serengeti quote includes.

Peak season realities

July is school-holiday busy. Northern viewpoints can cluster. Tanzania’s side is still often calmer than the busiest Maasai Mara bends. We use guides who leave a crowded bank and try another. Pair with Ngorongoro so you have a Big Five crater day even if the river is quiet.

July migration FAQs

When do Mara crossings start in July?
Often from mid-July, but rain in Kenya and Tanzania can shift this by weeks. We update you before you fly.
How many nights in the north in July?
Three is a working minimum; four or five is the crossing-focused itinerary.
Is July more expensive?
Yes. Peak northern camps, aircraft, and park/concession fees add up. We itemize everything.
July or August?
August is often more “herds established in the north.” July can catch the arrival. Both are crossing months.
Can children do a July northern safari?
Yes with private vehicle pacing. Some camps have age minimums, we filter those on the quote.

Secure July northern camps

River camps sell out first. A no-obligation quote from Arusha starts the hold process.
