The Serengeti’s Great Wildebeest Migration in September

September is the sleeper hit of crossing season. Herds typically remain in the northern Serengeti–Mara system, rivers still get charged, and some August frenzy eases as European holidays end. If you can travel now instead of August, we often say yes.

September herds still own the north, crossings remain the headline, grazing lines the daily texture.

September northern availability

Sometimes better than August, sometimes not, river camps are still finite. Ask for this year’s file.

Still the north

Do not downgrade to a central-only itinerary in September if crossings are why you came. Stay Kogatende-side. Animals do wander; some days the action is inland. That is a northern game drive, not a failure. Peek at October if you travel late month.

September advantages

  • Dry, photogenic, warm days and cool nights
  • Crossing potential comparable to August on many years
  • Slightly easier restaurant tables and airstrip seats, not always, but often
  • Superb pairing with Kilimanjaro routes in the same dry window

September balloons over golden grass are a favourite add-on, book the slot with the camp, not as an afterthought.

A full Tanzania September

Trek Machame or Lemosho, rest in Arusha, fly north for four migration nights, crater on the way home, then Zanzibar. That is a two-week dream we operate as one invoice. Shorter version: skip the mountain and do Tarangire–crater–north.

September migration FAQs

Are there still crossings in September?
Yes in a typical year. September sits inside the July–October Mara River window.
Is September cheaper than August?
Sometimes slightly; it is still high season. The bigger win is often availability and mood, not a deep discount.
September or October?
September is more “herds settled in the north.” October can start the southward idea. Both can show crossings in the first half of October.
Can I see the Big Five in September?
Serengeti plus Ngorongoro is the usual Big Five plan. Rhino odds are highest in the crater, not guaranteed anywhere.
Is September good for photography?
Excellent, dry air, dust beams, river action, and golden grass.
